In rooms, dream-inspiring headboards are painted in a chic manner, backlit for a special effect. Hallways are lit up with fluorescent fish tank lighting that is too cool for school. The entryway is decorated with a black-crystal chandelier and a cream shag rug. Situated near the Royal Palace and the Plaza Mayor, Mario belongs to Room Mate, a budget designer chain of boutique hotels in Spain that prides itself on cutting-edge interior design and a serious eye for fashion.įrom the get-go, Mario looks as if it springs from a home décor magazine. Slight negatives was returning to hotel after 13.30 to find cleaners not having completed their work and so not possible to chill and size of room smaller than expected, but just about ok for 2 nights though we had several suit cases as going on to Lanzarote for a week after 3 days in Madrid. As celebrating a wedding anniversary they very kindly and unexpectedly left a small bottle of champagne and personalised card in the room. Offered to book taxi but there is a busy plaza and taxi rank 1 minute away so no need, but it was nice to have it offered. Sol and Mayor plaza a 5 minute walk and Retiro Park a leisurely 25 minutes even in heat. Very central and beside Opera house and very short distance to Royal Palace. My wife and I enjoyed an excellent 2 night stay at Room Mate Mario.
